One classic event for elementary students in America and England is "Show-and-tell."

Every week, one student will bring something important to them-- for example, a book, a piece of sports equipment, or a piece of art--and they have three to five minutes as the center of attention to brag about their interests.

American kids love the attention!

For our second speech in first grade, we wanted our students to try a traditional show-and-tell. It took a lot of time to think up what items each student wanted to bring... We had to say things like "No! You can't bring your dog to school!" and "Wait... how big is that stuffed animal? Can you carry it on the train?!"

The speeches were phenomenal.

The audience took memos about what everyone brought, and since each student had to fill a full minute with information and opinions, there was a lot to write about. We saw graduation albums, gifts from grandparents, a music-box, and a pair of stinky sports shoes. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I think I saw a faint glint some people's eyes--the American thrill of being the center of attention!

アメリカやイギリスの小学校では、昔から定番のアクティビティがあります。それが「Show and Tell（ショー・アンド・テル）」です。

毎週1人の生徒が、大好きな本やスポーツの道具、自分で描いた絵などの自分にとって大切な物を学校に持参し、みんなの前で紹介します。

たった数分間ですが、その間は自分がずっと主役！

アメリカの子どもたちは、こういった時間が大好きです。

今回、1年生の2回目のスピーチでは、この「Show and Tell」にチャレンジしてみました。

何を紹介するのかを考えるのに、生徒たちはかなり悩んでおり、授業中に「犬は学校に連れてこられないよ！」「え？ そのぬいぐるみ、どのくらい大きいの？ 電車で持ってこれる？」といった、教科書にない英語も飛び交いました。

当日は、活気あふれる素晴らしい発表となりました！

発表者が1分間のスピーチで、持参したものの特徴や自分の思いを堂々と英語で発表する一方で、聞いている生徒たちも、クラスメイトの発表に耳を傾け、熱心にメモを取る姿が印象的でした。

卒業アルバム、おじいちゃんおばあちゃんからのプレゼント、オルゴール、そして汗と涙の滲んだスポーツシューズといろいろな「宝物」が登場しました。

気のせいかもしれませんが...発表中、何人かの目がキラッと光っていたような気がします。

ひょっとすると、アメリカ流の「注目されるワクワク感」を、ちょっぴり味わったのかもしれません！
